There are not much clear information about history of Marmaris. However, previously belonged to the Carian Empire. Marmaris was formerly known as Physkos.
The city became known as Marmaris during the period of the Beylik of Menteşe.
According to the historian Herodotus, there had been a castle on the site since 3000 BC.
When Sultan Suleiman set out for the conquest of Rhodes, the castle of Marmaris served as a base for the Ottoman Navy. The castle was rebuilt in 1522 by Sultan Suleiman.
This castle has been restorated and started to used as a museum since 1991.
Marmaris is located at the meeting place of the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, in Mugla province. Located in southwest Turkey. It is a port city lies along the shoreline of the Turkish Riviera. Because of these geography and climate one of Turkey’s biggest holiday resorts. This beautiful town has Mediterranean climate. So, summers are long and dry-hot.
