There are not much historical information known about the origin of the city. The Phrygians built a temple that used by the citizens of the nearby town of Laodicea. It would later form the centre of Hierapolis. Bronze coins, dating to the 2nd century BC give the name Hieropolis (Holy City). Hierapolis was once a Roman and Byzantine spa city. Above the travertines Hierapolis has ruins and a museum. There is Antique Pool that remains from Roman times in spa city of Hierapolis.
Pamukkale was made a World Heritage Site in 1988.
