History

The first known reference to Moscow dates from 1147. At the time it was a minor town on the western border of Vladimir-Suzdal Principality. Early 14th century, Moscow competed with the neighboring city of Tver. By the end of the 15th century, under Ivan the Great, the majority of Russian lands were united around Moscow. In 1712 Peter the Great moved the capital to newly established St. Petersburg. However, Russian emperors continued to be crowned in Moscow. In 1918, after the October Revolution, the Bolsheviks decided to move the capital back to Moscow. Moscow became the capital of the Soviet Union. After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Moscow continued to serve as the capital.

Moscow is the capital and largest city of Russia. The city is situated on the banks of the Moskva River ​in central Russia. It is the largest city with its entire territory in Europe. The city has over 40 percent of its territory covered by greenery, making it one of the greenest cities in Europe. Average temperatures in the warm months of June, July and August are around 20 to 26 °C.

 

Activities

People start to explore Moscow, from Kremlin and Red Square the heart of the city. St Basil’s Cathedral amazes with its mind-boggling magnificence. Moscow subway is famous for its underground architecture: 44 of more than 200 stations are listed as cultural heritage sites. Moscow’s largest and most beautiful shopping mall Gum located in Red Square. Moreover, this place is preferred not only for shopping but also for seeing the 120-year-old historical building. Novy Arbat and Tverskaya Street  are shown as the place where famous nightclubs are.

Culinary

Since Moscow is a cultural center, you can easily find both Russian and other countries’ cuisines. You can find examples from the cuisines of Italian, Mexican, Japanese and many other countries.

Fastfood chains are also an alternative in the city. You can also buy beer at fast food places. Since the drink is cheap, you can find especially vodka everywhere.

You will not have trouble ordering in restaurants because they offer English menu and waiters usually speaks English well.

Serving as upper class restaurant Cafe Pushkin is one of the most famous in Moscow.
